Woolly cactus brings Tex Mex to Bristol Bridge |

/> Our StrEAT season has finished this year but most of our street food vendors are still busy, out on the Xmas market circuit. Nick & Ashley came to Bristol from Texas, so they know their stuff. And they’ve thought up a tasty menu filled with exciting dishes so you’ll definitely chuck your frugal homemade sarnie in the office bin. I visited on a chilly Thursday lunchtime. I was pleased to see a snaky queue of office workers who’d braved the cold. There was a brightly coloured, woolly wrapped trailer parked on the corner of Victoria Street, not too far from Temple Meads station. The menu is split into breakfast and lunches (including some great meal deals) and Woolly Cactus herald the fact they’re the only place in UK selling queso & chips. This staple snack is Mexico’s gooey fondue – hot melted cheese with pepper and spice, with chunks of fresh tomatoes and crunchy tortillas for dunking. Woolly Cactus grub is great value and filling. You can pick up a meal deal for £4.50. Simply choose taco or quesadilla, stuff it with your choice of mince, chicken or black beans. Sides come too; try Guadeloupe long grain rice stirred with onions, tomatoes & Mexican spices. And liquid refreshments are fine too - coke, in proper bottles, Fentimans, for the soft drink connoisseur or even coffee imported from Austin, Texas. I ordered a soft flour tortilla taco with spicy mince & onions and asked Sean to add a couple of extra jalepenos (to stave off the cold you understand). We chatted about his real passion, art. He explained to me that he joined the team so he could work part time. The team share the shifts – it’s hard work otherwise, as Woolly Cactus is open between 8am and 3pm Monday to Friday. It’s a brilliant way of operating a small business – share risk or profit every day. It makes social media and pulling in the punters all the more important. These guys are on Twitter too, like lots of other independent traders in Bristol. Check out @TheWoollyCactus to join the chat. Make your way down to eat your fill. I’m ashamed it’s taken me so long to head downtown. Check out their website for more info. http://woollycactus.com/ |
